Fernando Botero

And time for a little artistic interlude…

Medellin’s most famous artistic son – Fernando Botero  (1932 – 2023) has certainly left his mark on the City of Eternal Spring and a plaza in the middle of downtown is dedicated to him, in addition to a whole floor of the Museum of Antioquia.

And quite right too! His paintings and sculptures are unmistakably his and manage to be at the same time, light-hearted and jovial whilst at times maintaining a cutting critique of society and politicians.

So it was a delight to dodge the unsettling hangers about in this very sketchy central part of the city to snap a few photos before striding into the glorious – but misnamed – Museum of Antioquia. Definitely an art gallery more than a museum, which celebrates the best of Antioquia, the Department in which Medellin sits.

But for me the actual star of the show was the museum building itself. Formerly the Office of the Mayor, it’s an art-deco classic. Two inner courtyards with fountains provide a sea of tranquillity to escape the mania outside. The original features have maintained to the highest level and it’s a stunning example of my favourite design/architectural style. Look at the photos! Wow!
